German Courses – DaF/DaZ

Semester Evening Courses (ULG DaF/DaZ)

If courses will take place online or offline depends on the relevant COVID-19 situation. Attention: You need a 2G-proof (recovered or vaccinated) in order to be able to participate in face-to-face courses.

General Information

Our semester evening program is a university course (ULG) offered by  the University of Klagenfurt. The university course “German as a Foreign and Second Language” offers German classes for students with non-German language backgrounds, enabling them to acquire German at the standard levels described in the Course Aim Regulation of the European Council and the European Language Portfolio. Courses take place in the winter and summer semester (each semester spans 4 months) and consist of 2 x 3 teaching units (1 TU = 45 minutes) per week. All courses take place from 6 to 9 p.m. For the succesful attendance of a course 9 ECTS credits are awarded.

Proficiency Control and Grading Procedures

The overall grade is based on the students’ performance during the course (effective classroom participation as well as passing the midterm test) and of the final exam at the end of the semester. We also grade the four language skills (speaking, reading, listening, writing) separately. Please note that a negative grade (5 = failed) in one of the language skills automatically results in a negative overall grade.
Grading Scale: 1 Excellent – 2 Good – 3 Satisfactory – 4 Passed – 5 Failed.

Attendance and Certificate of Completion

Only course participants who are legally enrolled (full payment of ALL fees by the specified deadlines) and who have not missed more than three sessions are entitled to a final certificate. If you must miss lessons for well-founded, important reasons, please contact us immediately. We will try to find a solution. Important reasons are those that are likely to prevent you from continuing the course (e.g. illness, family commitments, unforeseeable or inevitable events).

Negative Final Certificate

If you complete a course with “failed”, you can only advance to the next level if you either

  • take a resit before the start of the follow-up course or
  • provide proof of your language skills accepted by the course management.

Changing Classes/Course Interruption

Changing classes is possible within the first week after the beginning of the semester and only in consultation with the course management. If you drop out, interrupt your course or don’t attend at all, no course fees will be refunded without exception. Therefore, please only sign up if you’re sure you can actually participate.

Please note that attendance is compulsory in all courses. If you stay away without excuse for more than 3 sessions, your right to receive a final certificate is forfeited.

Placement Test

You will be assigned to the appropriate class based on the results of the placement test that takes place at the beginning of the semester. The placement test consists of an oral part (interview with our language trainers) and a written part (computer-based).

Placement test: NOT REQUIRED

NO TEST IS NEEDED if

  • you are an absolute beginner,
  • recently took part in one of our intensive German courses,
  • already completed a semester evening course in the previous semester
  • or have attained an examination certificate (ÖIF, ÖSD) that is not older than one year.

Placement test: REQUIRED

If none of the options 1 to 4 apply, you are required to take the placement test. Make sure to sign-up beforehand, as the test is only open to those already registered. In any case, please come to the office beforehand or contact us by phone or email.
For information on when the tests are held please refer to Dates + Deadlines.

Course Fee

€ 480.00 per semester including learning materials, placement test and final certificate.

Please only sign up if you’re sure you can actually participate. The course fee must be paid upon registration and is not refundable.

Payment of the Austrian Student Union (ÖH) Fee

In addition to the course fee, the compulsory contribution fee of the Austrian Student Union (ÖH), currently € 20.70, must be paid within the specified deadlines. Please note: if the ÖH fee is not paid or is not paid in time, the registration will be invalid and you are no longer allowed to attend, regardless of the fact that you’ve paid the course fee. How can I pay the fee?

Registration

Registration and admission takes place as an extraordinary listener (according to vacancies)

All persons from the age of 17 can be admitted, provided that there are enough free course places available. Please note that only one language course can be taken in a semester. Registration must be made within the specified registration deadlines, Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the language course office, east building, 2nd floor, room # O.2.04.
If possible, try to complete the registration within the first two weeks of the scheduled period. We only have a certain number of course places available per semester. It can therefore happen, that the courses are fully booked, even if you try to register within the registration deadlines. We have waiting lists during the registration period. If you have your name listed, you will be informed immediately – if this happens – of an available course place.

First-Time Registration

If you register for the first time, the following steps are necessary. Please read the instructions carefully. This will save you and us a lot of queries and unnecessary correspondence.

  • Step 1: Fill in the online application

Please fill in the online application on the AAU website. Immediately after submitting the online application, the University of Klagenfurt will automatically send you a confirmation email*. In addition to the link to the AAU intranet, it contains your username. You set the password yourself when you log in for the first time.

*Please also check the spam folder of your mailbox if necessary. This email is extremely important!

  • Step 2: Add the course to your list of studies

Only after you have added the university course “German as a foreign and second language” to your studies can we localize you on the intranet and report your final registration to the admissions and examination office.

  • Step 3: Fill in the registration form and sign contract

    • Please download the registration form and the participant contract (one file), fill it in completely, sign the contract and send these documents to dia@aau.at.
    • In your email please let us know, if you’re an absolute beginner, or (if you have previous knowledge) when you want to take the placement test (dates can be found under “dates + deadlines”). If you are starting from scratch, you obviously do not have to sit the test, but please inform us anyway.
  • Step 4: Send additional documents

    • Please send a photo or a scan of your valid photo ID (passport, identity card, residence permit) and send it to dia@aau.at. Your ID must be a document that shows your nationality (driver’s license is not suitable).
    • In addition we need your current confirmation of registration (in Austria it is called “Meldebestätigung” or “Meldezettel”). It is issued by the responsible registration authority (municipal office or city hall) and, if a you have a citizen card, can also be requested online from the Central Registration Office (ZMR).
    • Last but not least, if you have an ecard (Austrian social security card) please provide a copy thereof as well. If you do not have one, no problem at all.
  • Step 5: Pay course fee

When all requested documents were received and checked by us, please arrange for the payment of the course fee:

    Beneficiary: University of Klagenfurt
Name of bank: Raiffeisen Landesbank Kärnten
Address of bank: Raiffeisenplatz 1, 9020 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee
    IBAN: AT42 3900 0000 0251 5039
    BIC: RZKTAT2K
Reference: Your full name | AL 2878200021

Make sure that the payment is made without bank charges occuring for the beneficiary.

  • Step 6: Pay ÖH-fee

Within the set deadlines you must also pay the fee of the Austrian Student Union (ÖH).

    How does that work?
Log in to the campus portal campus.aau.at. Click “Meine Visitenkarte” and then “Studienbeitragsdaten”. There you’ll find your personal reference number which you must indicate when effecting the payment (this is absolutely necessary!). It takes up to 4 bank days until the payment will be visible:

Most room names are made up of three parts. The format is “building.floor.room”. The first part specifies the building in which the seminar room is located: N = north wing. The second part, on which floor the room is located and the third finally designates the number of the room. “N.1.42”, for example, indicates the north wing, 1st floor, room # 42.

Every now and then there may be classroom changes. Your course instructors will keep you updated. Nevertheless, it is advisable to get regular information on the AAU intranet. You will always find the latest information about your course there.

Incoming Students

Erasmus+, Joint Study, Multiple & Double Degree etc.

General Information

If you informed the International Office (you will be contacted directly by them), that you would like to take a German class, they will reserve a course place for you. This place, however, is only reserved until the end of the registration period. If you decide not to attend, please inform us immediately so that the course place can be allocated to another student.

Please note, that after the registration deadline we’re unable to offer you a course place. Therefore, make sure to register in time!

Course Fee

For incoming students the International Office offers the course place at a reduced fee. You only pay a low cost contribution, the remaining amount is paid by the university. Please note, that the special offer can only be redeemed once, i.e. if you already attended a course at the low rate, for an additional one you will have to pay the regular fee.

Scholarships on intensive courses for Joint Study students are granted by the International office. If you’re interested in taking intensive classes prior to the semester, please contact incoming.exchange@aau.at.

If you are an international student outside an exchange program at the University of Klagenfurt, you may also be able to attend the course on special terms. Please inquire at the office of the relevant department. They will contact the International Office and will inform you if you qualify for a discount.

There might also be discounts for international staff of the University of Klagenfurt. Please make an inquiry directly to the department you’re working for.

If after the registration you drop your course or don’t attend at all, NO course fees will be refunded! Therefore, if you’re not sure you can attend, do NOT register! The (non-refundable) course fees are payable upon registration. We only accept cash payments.

Payment of the Austrian Student Union (ÖH) Fee

In addition to the course fee, the contribution of the Austrian Student Union (ÖH), currently € 20.70, must be paid within the specified deadlines. There are no tuition fees. Attention: If the ÖH fee is not paid or is not paid in time, the registration will be invalid and the course will be excluded immediately, regardless of the fact that the course fee has already been paid. How can I pay the fee?

Registration

For the registration you will need:

  • Your reserved course place
